ANZBMS Hypophosphataemic Bone Disorders Case Series

JBMR Plus Special Edition on Hypophosphataemic Bone Disorders 

An ANZBMS initiative

Supported by an independent Medical Education Grant from Kyowa Kirin Australia

Brief: The Australia and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) is excited to announce a call for original research and case reports on hypophosphataemic bone disorders. Hypophosphataemic bone disorders encompass a group of genetic and acquired conditions that lead to a range of musculoskeletal abnormalities and systemic complications from childhood through to adulthood. They often present a diagnostic challenge requiring a multidisciplinary approach for effective management.

This initiative by ANZBMS aims to encourage healthcare professionals, researchers, and experts in the field to provide their experience and expertise to disseminate high-quality research exploring various aspects of hypophosphataemic bone disorders (other than nutritional rickets) and its management, including but not limited to:

1. X-linked hypophosphataemia
2. Autosomal dominant hypophosphataemic rickets
3. Tumour-induced osteomalacia
4. Ferric carboxymaltose infusion induced hypophophataemia 
5. Other rare forms of hypophosphataemic bone disorders

We aim to compile valuable clinical insights and experiences related to hypophosphataemic bone disorders, contributing to improved understanding, diagnosis and treatment strategies. Young children as well as older adults affected by these conditions may benefit from research that informs both clinicians and scientists and advances the management of hypophosphataemic disorders. Submissions by clinicians and scientists at all career stages are encouraged. ANZBMS membership is not required.

This issue will be supported by the guest editors Prof Richard Prince, Prof Craig Munns, Dr Albert Kim and Dr Madhuni Herath.

Article Selection
This is a two-stage, competitive process:

• Stage 1: Abstract selection
• 1.1 Abstract submission by interested authors
• 1.2 Selection of the most competitive abstracts by the guest editors and members of the Hypophosphataemia Working Group
• Stage 2: Successful authors of Stage 1 to submit full manuscripts for review.
• 2.1 Review of the manuscripts for guideline compliance by the guest editors
• 2.2 Review of the submissions by the JBMR Plus editorial team
• 2.3 Announcement of successful applicants and publication of the JBMR Plus Special Edition

Scope: We invite the following types of articles for submission:

• Case reports and case series which discuss a pertinent aspect(s) of patient presentation and/or management, including a literature review
• Original research investigating aspects of hypophosphataemic disorders, including extra-skeletal manifestations
• Systematic reviews and meta-analyses that add value to the current body of literature
• We acknowledge the burden of disease on individuals with hypophosphataemic disorders and their carers and welcome consumer perspectives as part of this special edition.

Format: An abstract of up to 500 words and including an

• Introduction/Background
• Methods/Presentation
• Results
• Conclusion/Discussion
• References

A table (x1) and/or figure (x1) can be included and will not count towards the word count, nor will the references.
Case reports must be de-identified to protect patient privacy, and written consent should be obtained from the patient.
Successful abstract authors from Stage 1 will be invited to submit a full manuscript for consideration of publication adhering to the author guidelines published at https://asbmr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/24734039/homepage/forauthors 

Timeline:

• Submission of abstract to ANZBMS ECIC by 28th January 2024
• Successful authors informed: January 2024
• Submission of manuscripts by authors successful in Stage 1: April 21st 2024
