Standard 1 - STAFF
There shall be sufficient professional and support
staff with adequate training and experience to supervise and conduct the
work of the unit.
Commentary
Work assignment in densitometry shall be consistent with the education,
training and experience of the staff. Only staff trained in densitometry
shall operate bone densitometers and such staff shall only perform scans
for which they have been specifically trained. A technologist in bone
densitometry shall be tertiary educated (degree or diploma) in the field
of radiography, nuclear medicine, science or nursing, and must have additional
post-graduate training in bone densitometry. Staff performing Quantitative
Computed Tomography (QCT) must be trained radiographers. Appropriate documentation
shall be available to demonstrate that the procedures used and tests performed
are within the scope of the education, training and experience of the
individual (Appendix 1).
Duties of the technologist shall include patient scanning, scan analysis
and reviewing of results. In addition they must perform or supervise all
quality control procedures and personally review results. Training of
the technologist shall include at least the following elements:
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications as noted above;
- Radiation safety (hazard analysis, regulations, patient advice, licensing);
- Patient management (reception, advising, lifting etc);
- DXA (and/or QCT) scanning training;
- DXA (and/or QCT) quality assurance and equipment performance;
- Relevant statistical analysis & report generation;
Staff operating equipment shall be competent, and may be required to
produce evidence of their qualifications and training, as well as demonstrate
their competence in a practical sense.
