Surgeon General releases report on osteoporosis and bone health
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Surgeon General's Office has released its first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis today, during the Bone and Joint Decade's National
Awareness Week. The report notes that by 2020, half of all American citizens older than age 50 will be at risk for fractures from osteoporosis and low bone mass if no immediate action is taken by individuals at risk, doctors, health systems, and policymakers. The report is an example of the different activities undertaken during the Bone and Joint Decade to promote public knowledge and understanding of the impact of musculoskeletal diseases and to bring evidence into action. The Surgeon General has published a companion "People's Piece" that offers ready-to-use information on how people can improve their bone health. Free copies are available by calling toll free 1-866-718-BONE. The entire report is available at: http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/bonehealth/ .
