This year the ANZBMS is launching a workshop aimed specifically for some of the more junior members of the society, both scientists and clinicians. The workshop will take a common clinical problem, such as osteoporosis, and will discuss the case in depth. In particular, the aim is to explore how basic science informs the understanding and management of the clinical problem, and how the clinical conundrum can inform creative research. The discussion might cover questions such as – What is anabolic failure? How can we measure this clinically? What are bone turnover markers? What do you look for a bone density scan? Why do glucocorticoids cause osteoporosis? How can PTH cause anabolism? How do you identify a cell as osteoblast or osteoclast? How do you do a bone biopsy? – and other such questions at the science/medicine interface.
The workshop will be relaxed and discursive and aims to help the more junior members of ANZBMS to ask their burning questions in a forum perhaps less overwhelming than the main scientific meeting.
This workshop will be chaired by the distinguished clinician-scientist Prof Ian Reid, and will involve many other members of the ANZBMS of both clinical and scientific bent.
And it’s free!! We look forwards to seeing you there.
