The International Society for Clinical Densitometry will be conducting two
courses on clinical bone densitometry.

The first course will cater for the needs of Clinicians who request or report bone densitometry tests and will be conducted over two full days. The second course will be aimed at bone densitometry Technologists and will also be conducted over two days; providing best practice knowledge and skills, with emphasis on the operation of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Both courses will terminate with an examination that if passed, would lead to ISCD certification. Courses can be attended without taking the exam, though no certification would then be provided.

Collectively the courses will be attractive to all disciplines (endocrinology, radiology, nuclear medicine, general practice, nursing and technologists) working in the area of management of metabolic bone disease using densitometry.

Please note that a coach transfer will be running from Sydney University to Cypress Lakes Resort, Hunter Valley on Tuesday, 17 August 2004 – picking up at 1840 hours. Physicians/Paediatricians and Scientists with an interest in paediatric bone health are invited to the Paediatric Bone Symposium to be held on Monday, 16 August 2004 and the morning of Tuesday, 17 August 2004. Dr Frank Rauch from Montreal will be our guest speaker and his plenary talk will provide an understanding of what bone density actually measures. He will participate in a symposium on osteogenesis imperfecta discussing the background for why bisphosphonates are such useful drugs in OI - other topics will include a discussion on the medical complications of OI and a talk on when bisphosphonate therapy should be stopped. There will be a symposium on environmental and lifestyle effects on paediatric bone - topics will include nutritional rickets in multicultural Australia, interaction between exercise, calcium and bone, and undernutrition effects on bone. There will also be a clinical symposium on unusual local or generalised metabolic bone disease in children. The symposium will include discussion on the management of orthopaedic conditions in childhood that may benefit from bisphosphonate therapy and management of immobilised limbs.

The ANZBMS, in conjuction with Osteoporosis Australia, will conduct a clinical update symposium on Osteoporosis to be held
in Sydney on Monday, 16 August 2004.

This is two days before the Annual Scientific Meeting of the ANZBMS, to be held in the Hunter Valley. The symposium will be aimed at specialists, GP's and all other health professionals interested in osteoporosis and bone. Sessions will cover Architecture, geometry and fracture risk; New horizons in treatment; Use and abuse of BMD and heel US; Vitamin D - The next big thing; HRT - Is it dead? and much more....
